چکیده

Mucus propelling cilia are excitable by many stimulants, and have been shown to increase their beating frequency up to threefold, by physiological extracellular stimulants, such as adenosine-triphosphate, acetylcholine, and others. This is thought to represent the evolutionary adaptation of mucociliary systems to the need of rapid and efficient cleansing the airways of foreign particles. However, the mucus transport velocity depends not only on the beat frequency of the cilia, but on their beat pattern as well, especially in the case of mucus bearing cilia that beat in a complex, three-dimensional fashion. In this study, we directly measured the force applied by live ciliary tissues with an atomic force microscope, and found that it increases linearly with the beating frequency. This implies that the arc swept by the cilia during their effective stroke remains unchanged during frequency increase, thus leading to a linear dependence of transport velocity on the beat frequency. Combining the atomic force microscope measurements with optical measurements, we have indications that the recovery stroke is performed on a less inclined plane, leading to an effective shortening of the overall path traveled by the cilia tip during this nontransporting phase of their beat pattern. This effect is observed to be independent of the type of stimulant (temperature or chemical), chemical (adenosine-triphosphate or acetylcholine), or concentration (1 microM-100 microM), indicating that this behavior may result from internal details of the cilium mechanical structure.

Effects of Impeller Gap on Rotor Vibration in a High Speed Centrifugal Compressor: A Numerical and Experimental Analysis (TECHNICAL NOTE)

Centrifugal compressors produce high pressure ratio and rotate at speeds. So, a tiny unbalance can produce severe vibration. In this paper, effects of impeller gap on rotor vibration in a high speed centrifugal compressor is investigated. For this purpose, a numerical and experimental analysis are carried out. The moving reference frame method in FLUENT software is used for modeling of geometri...

A finite elements study on the role of primary cilia in sensing mechanical stimuli to cells by calculating their response to the fluid flow

The primary cilium which is an organelle in nearly every cell in the vertebrate body extends out of the cell surface like an antenna and is known as cell sensor of mechanical and chemical stimuli. In previous numerical simulations, researchers modeled this organelle as a cantilevered beam attached to the cell surface. In the present study, however, we present a novel model that accommodates for...

Fundamental understanding of goaf gas displacement in longwall goaf

Fundamental understanding of the goaf gas distribution in a gassy coal mine is necessary for developing effective goaf gas drainage strategies in the longwall coal mine. The goaf gas was subjected to the surface and body forces that were classified depending upon whether they acted on the surface area or the volume of the gas element. Of these forces, the body forces were more predominant in di...

Vibration and Critical Speed of Axially loaded Rotating Orthotropic Cylindrical Shells

In this paper, classical thin shell theory is used to analyze vibration and critical speed of simply supported rotating orthotropic cylindrical shell. The effects of centrifugal and Coriolis forces due to the rotation are considered in the present for‌mulation.. In addition, axial load is applied on cylinder as a ratio of critical buckling load. Finally the effects of orthotropic ratio, materia...
